CONQUERING Lavangen’s
MOUNTAINS

Ice climbing is a huge sport in this part of Norway, and indeed there are plenty of quality waterfalls and coastal ice climbing in the Troms region. This area in particular attracts ice climbers from all over the world.

Spansdalen, the valley under Spanstinden mountain between Fossbakken and Tennevoll is particularly famous and the main attraction during the Arctic Ice Festival. With a large choice of short and long routes & options for all skill levels, it´s one of the classic ice destinations in Northern Norway. The largest waterfall in the close by area is almost 600 meters.

The Waterfalls of SPANSDALEN and
TENNEVOL

Spansdalen is the valley which runs down from Fossbakken (on the E6 highway north of Bjerkvik) to the Lavangen fjord at Tennevoll. The valley is an ice climbing paradise, with numerous frozen waterfalls on both sides. They range in length from one to seven pitches, and most of them have short approaches from the road (up to 60 minutes). The approaches can usually be done without skis or snowshoes.

The area & many of the lines listed here are described in Rick McGregor’s ice guide bellow.
